FIRST HEBREW-CROATIAN DICTIONARY PUBLISHED IN CROATIA

ZAGREB, June 10 (Hina) - The first Hebrew-Croatian dictionary, edited by Zagreb theologian Rudolf Amerl, will be presented at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, in October, by its publisher, "Christian Present". The 440-page dictionary, with about 27,000 words and 100,000 synonyms, is divided into three parts. The 320-page first part is a standard dictionary, the second is a brief review of Hebrew grammar, while the third part is an appendix consisting of first names and geographical terms from the Old Testament. "Such a dictionary didn't exist in Croatia, yet the need exists", said Amerl, adding that the first edition was issued last week. According to the manager of "Christian Present", Adalbert Rebic, the dictionary is a "first-class event in our culture, testifying that Croatia nurtures the Hebrew heritage, which has come to us through the Bible and the presence of Jews in our region." The dictionary dealt with both the classical and the contemporary variants of Hebrew, Rebic, a professor at the Catholic Divinity College and principal of the Old Testament, Holy Writ and Hebrew Department, concluded.
