Margeurite Contat Hickel, who is chairing a working group for missing
persons in the ICRC, told a press conference in Sarajevo that it is little
possible that some of the people who are being sought for, are still alive.
'We believe that nine out of ten such persons are dead, but we hold
that members of their families have the right to know what had happened with
them. Any kind of truth is better than uncertainty', Contat Hickel said.
The aim of the campaign is to prompt possible witnesses to send
information on missing persons to the ICRC offices.
The ICRC has so far sent 13,440 requests for the search for missing
persons to the Bosnian Serb side.
The Bosniac side is expected to help discover the fate of 1,496
persons, while the Croat side has been sent 1,004 such requests.
