HSK TO DONATE US$ 10,000 TO SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION IN E.CROATIA

ZAGREB, March 1 (Hina) - Leaders of the Croatian World Congress (HSK), an umbrella organization of Croatian emigrants, on Sunday held a news conference to inform about conclusions of the HSK head committee's session held on February 28 and March 1 and 2 in Zagreb. The Croatian World Congress president, Simun Sito Coric, said the HSK had sent a proposal to Croatian Premier Zlatko Matesa for conducting a census of Croatians outside Croatia. An analysis of Croatian emigrants, including their ages, professions and occupations and which countries they live in, might be made on the ground of such a census. It was necessary, since media often cited not precise figures about Croatian immigrants, Coric said and added that might make an impression of a frivolous approach to that part of the Croatian nation. Speaking of HSK activities in the past, Coric said the Croatian Information Centre had set up its bases in Buenos Aires and in Switzerland and would open its office in Budapest next month. He added that the foundation "1,000 golden donors" had been established, and announced that a directory of Croatian societies and institutions abroad would be published soon. Ante Beljo, the head of the 'Hrvatska matica iseljenika', a cultural society of emigrants, told the conference that the Croatian Diaspora could obtain information from homeland by Internet, satellite programmes, the 'Matica' and 'Dom' magazines, and many books the Croatian Information Centre is publishing. Bela Tonkovic warned of difficulties Croatians were facing in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). He pointed to problems caused by Serbs who could not become reconciled to peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danubian area and were moving into the FRY. It has been announced that HSK representatives will travel to Vukovar today for talks with the UN Transitional Administrator of the area, Jacques Klein. They are expected to donate US$ 10,000 for construction of the first Croatian school after the return of Croatian displaced persons there. The HSK has its institutions in 27 countries.
