ZAGREB, Dec 21 (Hina) - Croatian National Sabor's President Vlatko
Pavletic on Monday forwarded a Christmas and New Year message to
Croatian citizens, expressing hope for better living standards in
1999.
"Although 1998 was marked by globally crucial events, which also
disrupted some of our plans and forecasts, we have still managed to
maintain a stable kuna rate, and secure a development rate within
the expected limits, while the inflation rate is much lower than it
is in other states we compare ourselves with", Pavletic said.
"Also, our policy, and the state budget for 1999, are based on the
social-market economy, that is why we expect in the next year an
efficient resolution of the problem of living standards of all
social groups, as well as financial and not only verbal guarantees
for young people, creation of new jobs, undeferrable reduction of
interior debts and the strengthening of the rule of law and all
institutions and associations protecting human rights".
"In that respect, the second visit of Pope John Paul II is in itself
an acknowledgement and message, but also a commitment which we have
accepted with satisfaction as a nation which knows how to work,
defend its freedom and independence, but also to forgive", Pavletic
said.
Concluding his message, the Parliament President wished "a
constructive cooperation to all those who know and are able to
build, represent and defend Croatia and its interests, and its
thousand-year-long identity".
