ROME, Dec 12 (Hina/AR) - Italy's 1999 budget might earmark some 15
billion lire to pay out in indemnity for property abandoned by the
"esuli", Italians from the north-western Croatian peninsula of
Istra who after World War Two opted and came to Italy.
An amendment to next year's budget stipulating that indemnity be
paid to Italian refugees for property seized by post-WW2 Yugoslavia
was motioned by Giovanni Ferrante, a member of the Democratic Left,
the government's majority party.
The amendment should be discussed next week.
According to Italian news agency AGI on Saturday, this is the first,
although symbolic, economic acknowledgement to the "esuli". It is
however a mere drop in the sea compared to the "5,000 billion lire
estimated as the value of the property which 250,000 'esuli' left in
Yugoslavia from 1945 onwards," the agency adds.
If parliament adopts the amendment, the "esuli" will receive 15
billion Italian lire in indemnity over the next three years.
