ZAGREB, Nov 30 (Hina) - The German government has decided to grant
one time payments of DM500 for victims of Nazi persecution in
Croatia during World War II. The project which is assumed to involve
some 350 people will be implemented by the Croatian Red Cross,
journalists were told at a press conference on Monday.
Requests can be submitted to the Croatian Red Cross after 30 June
1999, by persons who were detained in concentration camps
controlled directly by German administration. Requests also apply
to persons who were compelled to live in inhumane conditions
because of their political opposition to Nazism or as a result of
their racial or religious belonging or due to their beliefs.
Anyone whose health suffered - 50 per cent invalidity or 80 per cent
general invalidity can also apply for the one time payments.
Persons over 65 years of age are automatically considered to have 80
per cent invalidity.
Persons submitting requests for compensation shall be required to
show that they were Croatian residents at 1 January 1997.
A representative of the German Embassy in Croatia, Hans Dieter
Steinbach stressed that this was not payment of war damages but
specifically a humanitarian assistance project for those who
survived Nazi persecution.
In this light, only survivors themselves shall be eligible for this
assistance and descendants will not be able to submit claims.
