SARAJEVO, Nov 23 (Hina) - After a week of bitter discussions, harsh
comments, and repeated accusations, the media and public in the
Bosnian capital showed a surprising disinterest in commenting the
signing of a special relations agreement between Croatia and the
Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BH) and the Ploce port agreement
between Croatia and BH.
As if the signing, which took place in Zagreb on Sunday, had been a
mere routine event, the electronic media reported the facts on who
signed the agreements and the signers' brief comments on the two
documents' significance.
In its central evening news broadcast on Sunday, the Sarajevo
television gave particular attention to a statement made by Bosnian
Presidency member Alija Izetbegovic, who said that he followed the
signing of the two agreements with different feelings.
The "Dnevni Avaz" daily assessed on Monday that by signing the
agreements, Croatia and BH had overcome the crisis which reached
its peak last week, when the signing of the agreements had been
postponed twice.
This daily, close to the governing (Bosniak Muslim) Party of
Democratic Action, warned however that the final arrangement of
Croatian-Bosnian relations would ultimately depend on the
agreement's implementation, and not on its signing.
The priorities, according to "Dnevni Avaz", are adjusting borders
and resolving the Bosniak Muslims' status in Croatia.
"Oslobodjenje's" commentary, ending with a question mark, stated
that the signing of the two documents could put an end to mutual
doubts.
"The special relations agreements was completely unnecessarily
made into a source of misunderstanding, since it does not have the
importance ascribed to it," said Kresimir Zubak, president of the
New Croat Initiative party.
He told reporters it was incorrect that the equality of Croats in BH
was being ensured only with the special relations agreement.
Zubak added the Bosniak Muslims' fears that the agreement
represented a possibility of dividing BH were unfounded.
"The special relations agreement is just a consistent elaboration
of the Washington and Dayton (peace) agreements, and its real
contents have yet to be established through many annexes," he
said.
