ZAGREB, Nov 20 (Hina) - Amnesty International Croatia (AIH) has
joined a campaign against human rights violations in the United
States, it was reported at a press conference at the AIH HQ in Zagreb
on Friday.
Amnesty International (AI) commenced with its first international
campaign against human rights violations in the US on October 6. The
campaign will last until July 1999, and it will include about one
million AI members from around 150 countries.
The specific aspects of human rights violations which are being
stressed are: police brutality, capital punishment, inhumane
prison conditions, rejection to ratify international human rights
agreements, the policy towards asylum seekers and the transfer of
US weapons that is, its role in human rights violations.
The AIH will focus its campaign on lobbying against capital
punishment for juvenile delinquents in the US and police brutality
and for the improvement of prison conditions, announced Ines Bulic,
the AIH's co-ordinator for the campaign.
The AIH will on November 25 hold a peaceful protest in front of the
US Embassy in Zagreb. The demonstrators will on that day carry a
placard with the names of 70 juvenile delinquents who have been
sentenced to death and are awaiting their execution.
