VUKOVAR, 16 Aug (Hina) - The reconstruction of ten public
facilities in Vukovar is proceeding as planned, the Office for
Reconstruction of Public Buildings in Vukovar said.
The reconstruction of these buildings was taken over by Croatian
counties and other donors.
However, the largest obstacle to intensifying the process is the
removal of mines, as reconstruction workers do not want to take over
a building if not provided with a certificate saying the
construction site had been cleared of mines.
The first building which is being reconstructed is the central
pharmacy in the town centre. Its renovation will be financed by the
Croatian pharmaceutical company "Pliva" with about 5.5 million
kuna.
Reconstruction works on the pharmacy started at the end of July.
Another building - Vukovar pensioners' home - is also being
reconstructed. The donor in this project is Vukovar-Srijem County
with 1.3 million kuna.
The 6th primary school is being reconstructed by Bjelovar County.
Slavonski Brod County has taken over the financing of
reconstruction works on the railway station in Borovo Naselje with
three million kuna.
Despite a signed contract, reconstruction works have still not
started on the children's health centre, a project which should be
financed by Lika-Senj County with 3.3. million kuna.
The reason for the delay is that the reconstruction site has not
been completely cleared of mines.
Split County has taken over the reconstruction of the county
authorities building. The value of the project is 9.9 million
kuna.
Preparations for the reconstruction of a day care centre in Borovo
Naselje have started. The centre will be reconstructed by Split
County with 2.5 million kuna.
Sisak County will give five million kuna for the reconstruction of
the Eltz castle while Karlovac County is to finance the
reconstruction of a new primary school in Borovo Naselje with three
million kuna.
Reconstruction works on the grammar school have still not started.
The project is financed by the City of Zagreb with 15.6 million
kuna.
Contracts on the reconstruction of the ten facilities were signed
in Vukovar on 21 July in the presence of Reconstruction and
Development Minister Jure Radic.
The buildings are to be finished by the end of this year.
The initiative on their reconstruction was given by President
Franjo Tudjman.
