FIRES ON KORCULA SPREADING WHILE BLAZE NEAR ZRNOVNICA REACTIVATED

( Editorial: --> 2881 ) ZAGREB, 10 Aug (Hina) - The fire on the southern Adriatic island of Korcula has spread to the Svicalo hill and a valley to its right and to the Kom hill. The fire in Zrnovnica near Split was reactivated this morning due to winds while the fire on the island of Lastovo has not been spreading during the day, the government Crisis Committee said this afternoon. A report issued at noon said that the fire on Korcula was spreading towards the explosives storehouse of "Konstruktor" company. The company has been requested to move the explosive material. Two Canadair planes are extinguishing the fire on Kom and the valley between Kom and Svicalo. Open blazes are tending to reappear occasionally on Korcula. About 700 firefighters with 30 vehicles are trying to put the fire under control. The fire has consumed about 1,100 hectares of pine forest, grass and underbrush. An air bridge between Dubrovnik and Korcula was opened this morning and it will be used to transport firefighters and civil defence members to Korcula. The fire on Lastovo has not spread during the day and the situation there is stable except for Nizno Polje and Divlji Vrh, where it is partly active. Firefighters continue their efforts on Korcula and Lastovo. The fire on Zrnovnica in the Split County reactivated at 2am due to wind. Some 25 hectares of dense pine forest growing on inaccessible terrain is burning. A fire-fighting operation is under way. (hina) rml /mbr 101706 MET aug 98
