MOST FIRES IN DALMATIA REGION UNDER CONTROL - INTERIOR MINISTRY

( Editorial: --> 2489 ) ZAGREB, 8 Aug (Hina) - The fire which broke out two days ago on the southern Croatian peninsula of Peljesac has been put under control, the Interior Ministry's operational department for firefighting said in a statement Saturday morning. About 1,200 hectares of land have been consumed by the fire. The fire on the island of Korcula is still active on the northern location of Greben and in south-east near Veli Greben. About 700 firefighters with 70 vehicles are participating in putting the fire under control. Two fire fighting planes were sent early Saturday morning to Korcula. The fire has ravaged about 970 hectares of pine forest, grass and underbrush. About hundred firefighers with six vehicles are trying to extinguish the fire on the island of Lastovo. According to the latest information, the fire is still active on the north-eastern front. Some 950 hectares of underbrush and pine forest have been destroyed. Fire fighting brigades have contained a fire between Cavtat and Gabrile (southern Croatia) except for its eastern front. The fire has consumed about 700 hectares of land. The fire near Mokosica, which has destroyed about 200 hectares of land, is under control. The fire near Ninski Stanovi, in the Zadar area, which broke out yesterday, was contained yesterday afternoon. It has destroyed about 25 hectares of oak forest. Three fires which broke out in the area of Benkovac (Zadar hinterland) have been contained. The fire in the area between Zitnic and Pakovo Selo in Sibenik County is under control. The fire has consumed about 300 hectares of grass and underbrush. Other fires in Sibenik County have been put under control. The fire which broke out yesterday near Kastel Sucurac has been contained.
