ZAGREB, June 18 (Hina) - The Trial Chamber of the International
Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague
will hear the closing arguments of the defence and the prosecution
in the Ante Furundzija case on Monday June 22, an ICTY statement
said Thursday.
Former commander of Croatian Defence Council special forces called
the Jokers during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bosnian Croat
Furundzija is charged with torture and outrage upon personal
dignity including rape, which represent violations of the laws and
customs of war.
According to the indictment, Furundzija was present at the
interrogation of two female prisoners on May 15 1993, whom members
of his unit mistreated and raped, while Furundzija did nothing to
stop them.
Furundzija first appeared before the ICTY December 19 1997, a day
after being arrested in Vitez, central Bosnia, when he pleaded not
guilty.
His trial began June 8 this year and will be completed in record
time, unlike other trials before the ICTY.
