SARAJEVO, May 12, (Hina) - A unified police force in the Livno
Canton from the Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation is not and will not
be constituted until all provisions from the agreement of April 24
are fulfilled, especially until conditions are met for a safe work
enviroment for police officers of Serb nationality, Alexandar
Ivanko, spokesman for the United Nations, announced on Tuesday.
Ivanko stated that the UN mission in BiH had decided to inaugurate a
joint police force in the canton, head office being in Livno, and
this would be delayed until in the compound there are qualified
police officers of Serb nationality, of which most of them need to
be deployed in Drvar.
"Local authorities have not fulfilled all requirements of the
agreement reached", said Ivanko.
According to information obtained by the UN mission, safety of Serb
police officers could be imperilled if they were to take up
positions in Drvar, he added.
Ivanko also mentioned that this information was also given by the
acting Canton Internal Affairs Minister, Barisa Letica.
Ivanko said that the UN mission is withholding all comments with
regards to announcement of a united police force which was held in
Livno towards the end of last week, but he did specify that not one
representative from the international community in Bosnia-
Herzegovina was present, whereby this speaks for itself.
The UN mission will continue working with all sides, to secure and
strengthen the police force in the 10th canton, representing all
those who live there, including those now returning to Drvar, said
Ivanko.
