MAYOR SAYS VUKOVAR'S TOURISM INDUSTRY SHOULD FOCUS ON THE DANUBE

( Editorial: --> 5350 ) VUKOVAR/ILOK, April 7 (Hina) - Tourism Minister Sergej Morsan visited Vukovar-Srijem County on Tuesday to meet county and town officials and representatives of the local tourism industry. The meeting stressed the importance of hunting, angling, transit and rural tourism as the most promising areas for the development of local tourism. The county is also very keen on the promotion of the so-called wine road between Vukovar and Ilok, which runs along 1,300 hectares of vineyards. According to County Prefect Rudolf Koenig, the canal between the Sava and the Danube rivers, the construction of which is due to start in about two months, should also be exploited as a tourist attraction. Speaking about the prospects for the Vukovar tourism industry, Mayor Vladimir Stengl said it should focus on the Danube. He commended the decision by a Budapest yachting club to organise a regatta on the Danube between Vukovar and the Black Sea. He also announced that the Vukovar sports island would be upgraded into a Croatian Olympic Committee centre, stressing that the initiative had been supported by committee president Antun Vrdoljak. Morsan backed these ideas and asked for imminent drafting of plans for the development of the tourism industry in the county. (Hina) mm mr /mb 072143 MET apr 98
