PRISTINA, Mar 10 (Hina) - The United States special envoy for the
territory of the former Yugoslavia, Robert Gelbard, Tuesday voiced
his government's deep concern over the situation in the southern
Yugoslav province of Kosovo.
After talks with Kosovo Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova, Gelbard
advocated that all forms of violence be stopped.
He believed the Yugoslav Government should initiate the
establishment of confidence and dialogue, adding that Albanian
provocations had not been on a scale that would call for such
violence on the part of Serbian authorities.
Rugova pointed out the importance of a decision the Contact Group
reached yesterday to the effect of lowering tension in Kosovo.
He appreciated the US engagement in the Kosovo issue.
Albanians expected much more than they have been offered, but hoped
the US and the European Union would provide more assistance in the
future, Rugova said.
This afternoon Gelbard is to hold a press conference at the seat of
the American Information Centre in Kosovo capital Pristina.
