OSIJEK, Jan 12 (Hina) - The return of displaced persons to their
houses in eastern Croatia must be organised in order to avoid
incidents which could endanger results achieved in the process so
far, Osijek-Baranja County leaders said Monday at a meeting with
heads of municipalities in eastern Croatia.
County Prefect Anica Horvat said it was necessary to prevent
displaced persons from moving into their houses unorganised.
Recently there have been instances of such returns, but they were
individual, Horvat said.
According to Deputy Prefect Marko Barisin, there must be no
violence. He pointed out the important role of municipal housing
commissions which will have the task to resolve contentious cases
on the field.
In order to effectively resolve issues displaced persons encounter
on returning to their homes into which during their exile other
people had moved in, the municipal commissions will be in permanent
contact with the Regional Office for Displaced Persons and
Refugees, and the Agency for Facilitating Real Estate
Transactions
An operative headquarters will be set up within the National
Committee for the restoration of trust, said Barisin. Its task will
be to achieve field cooperation with municipal commissions in
resolving issues in the two-way return process.
It was pointed out today there existed problems when local Serbs,
who have been living in eastern Croatia before the war, moved into
houses of Croatian displaced persons.
