SARAJEVO, Dec 31 (Hina) - The maintenance and consolidation of the
sovereign, multi-ethnic state of Bosnia-Herzegovina is the only
way for the country and its peoples to enter Europe and the 21st
century, UN Mission chief in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jacques Klein,
said on Friday.
In a New Year's message issued in Sarajevo, Klein stressed that so
far the constitutional and legal frames for Bosnia-Herzegovina as a
modern European country had been set, but its entrance into Europe
must be earned as nobody wishes to accept a country in which
politicians are trying to maintain unsustainable mini-regions in
which they can be absolute rulers.
Klein confirmed the UN Mission would continue with efforts for a
state control of international borders to be established in the
country, the establishment of a police unit to represent the
country in peace missions, an increase in police officers of
minorities, and assistance in the restructuring of the judicial
system.
Klein expressed hope that more war crimes suspects would be brought
before justice, which is a necessary precondition for overall
progress in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
