BERLIN, Dec 16 (Hina) - Germany is restrained in supporting
Croatia's efforts at inclusion into Euro-Atlantic integration, and
Germany's presiding of the European Union (EU) has not fulfilled
Croatia's expectations, the Croatian Embassy in Berlin said in a
statement on Thursday.
Speaking about the German attitude to Croatia's endeavours to
integrate with Euro-Atlantic institutions, the embassy assessed "a
certain reservation can be noted, as opposed to previous years."
The Embassy's statement, issued on the occasion of tomorrow's
opening of the Embassy building in Berlin, has been interpreted as a
reaction to the strong criticism Germany has been exposed to by
other countries in Europe following its recognition of Croatia's
independence earlier this decade, which those countries assessed
as premature.
The statement also says that Germany's presiding of the EU this year
has not fulfilled Croatia's expectations.
The Croatian Embassy in Berlin, and Ambassador Zoran Jasic, were
not satisfied with German media reporting and commentaries on the
recent funeral of Croatian President Franjo Tudjman.
The "reports teem with stereotypes and across-the-board
condemnations," says the statement, and reminds that "the German
state television news" called the last respects paid the late
president by numerous Croatian citizens as an "organised bringing
of people to Zagreb."
The Embassy further points out the "relocation of the Croatian
Embassy from Bonn to a dynamic world capital like Berlin will give
new impetus to the advancement of Croatian-German relations."
The statement also says the Embassy expects "intensification of
relations in all spheres of the political, economic, and cultural
sectors," we well as Germany's support to Croatia's endeavours to
join the EU.
