Speaking at the last session of the committee in charge of
organising the funeral of the Croatian president today, Matesa said
the event was organised in the best possible way.
The event was attended by several hundred thousand people, and not a
single incident happened, Matesa said, reiterating his thanks to
the Croatian people, who, he said, had demonstrated a high level of
conscience.
Matesa thanked foreign state delegations who paid tribute to
President Tudjman - Turkey's President Suleyman Demirel, the
Slovene delegation with President Milan Kucan, Premier Janez
Drnovsek and other high officials as well as the Macedonian,
Hungarian, Bulgarian, Chinese, and other state delegations.
The Premier also thanked the Church, especially Zagreb Archbishop
Josip Bozanic and Cardinal Franjo Kuharic, and a member of the
committee, Josip Mrzljak, an auxiliary Zagreb bishop.
Matesa said credit also went to the Croatian Army - the First Guard
Corps - which together with the Interior Ministry carried out a
large part of the task. He also commended the City of Zagreb, its
mayor, Croatia Television, and other media.
Technically, everything was carried out as planned, Matesa said,
adding the committee would submit its closing report to Parliament
President and acting head of state Vlatko Pavletic.
