President Franjo Tudjman. "With Franjo Tudjman, Croatia is losing a statesman who led it to independence," Chirac said in his note. "He always presented Croatia in a dignified manner, and worked hard to contribute to its rapprochement with Europe to which Croatia had never stopped belonging."
