ZAGREB, Nov 13 (Hina) - Experts of the Zagreb-based Economy
Institute and a scientist, Nenad Starc, have drawn up a programme
for sustainable development of Smokvica, the municipality on the
island of Korcula, southern Adriatic.
This is the first programme of such kind for the development of a
Croatian island municipality to have been made on the grounds of the
Island Act, which came into effect on April 1, 1999.
This programme, ordered by the local authorities in Smokvica for
95,000 kuna (approximately 24,000 German marks) is to be discussed
by the Croatian Government and accepted by the end of this month.
It took about a year for experts to make this 70-page document.
Economists, sociologist, climatologists, transport and other
experts and scholars were engaged in this task.
According to the programme, agricultural production should be
extended and health tourism as well as yachting and aquatic sports
developed.
Professors of the Zagreb-based Medical School conducted an
analysis of the mud in the cove of Istruga in that municipality.
According to the results of the analysis, this is the curative mud
and can be used for the treatments of spinal, rheumatic,
gynaecological and skin diseases.
Under the Islands Act, 22 programmes of sustainable development of
islands should be made.
Starc said the implementation of this sustainable development of
Smokvica can ensure new 100 jobs. The programme does not exclude a
possibility of investing in high technologies, but it does exclude
possibilities of environmentally unfriendly projects.
One of plans is to construct an airport at Brna near Smokvica as well
as to build a marina for yachts. Starc thus believes that Korcula
can become a regional traffic junction.
