SWISS AMBASSADOR VISITS CROATIAN DEMINING CENTRE IN SISAK

SISAK, Nov 4 (Hina) - Switzerland's Ambassador to Croatia Paul Widner on Thursday visited the Croatian Demining Centre (HRC) in Sisak, where with HRC manager Damir Gorseta he discussed the Swiss government's support to mine-clearing in Croatia, and humanitarian mine-clearing plans in post-war Croatia. "The Swiss government's support to humanitarian mine-clearing has and means much to the HCR and Croatia, because it is a sign of solidarity and friendly understanding in the removal of mines, one of the biggest post-war difficulties in Croatia," Gorseta said. This year, the Swiss government has assisted in the mine-clearing of 500,000 square metres of terrain in Croatia, and also helped in the establishment of the European Union Demining Assistance Mission to Croatia, which assists the HRC in mine-clearing. Announcing mine-clearing projects which will be carried out by year's end, the Swiss ambassador said it was important to maintain the exemplary Croatian-Swiss cooperation in mine-clearing. "Our cooperation is also important for Croatia's role in the Stability Pact (for Southeast Europe), and for the realisation of the project of the Regional Centre for Demining in Croatia within the Pact. This is a major recognition to Croatia and the HRC, whose activity will be significant for stability and security in the wider region," said Gorseta. Ambassador Widner said Switzerland was willing to continue supporting humanitarian mine-clearing in Croatia, especially in the creation of conditions for a safe return of refugees and normal living.
