ZAGREB, Oct 21 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)'s
President Franjo Tudjman on Thursday stated, at a session of the HDZ
National Council, that he was intending to make a decision that the
parliamentary election be held on 22 December this year.#L#
He informed the HDZ National Council that he will finally decide
after the House of Representative passes a decision about the end of
the mandate of the current composition of the lower house, the HDZ
Secretariat-General reported on Thursday afternoon.
During Thursday's session, chaired by Tudjman, the HDZ National
Council discussed general domestic and foreign political
circumstances under which Croatia is in the run-up to the election
for the House of Representatives.
It was stressed that despite open support given by some
international factors to certain opposition parties, the
international community, generally speaking, was interested in the
politically stable Croatia, read a statement issued by the HDZ
Secretariat.
The statement cited the example of the successfully concluded
business of the sale of a part of Croatian Telecommunications (HT)
as the confirmation of foreign political and economic factors'
confidence in Croatia's stability, adding that it has been one of
the biggest foreign investments in this part of Europe.
The Council also adopted a draft election programme of the HDZ,
which will be presented in public at a session of the party's head
committee, election headquarters and all bodies of this ruling
party, scheduled for the mid-November.
The HDZ National Council discussed and supported a final bill on
electoral units, and stressed that there was progress in the
consistent respect for the integrity of some counties.
Discussing Wednesday's blockade of some roads in Slavonia (eastern
Croatia), the HDZ National Council believes that it is "pre-
election political manipulation of the Croatian Peasants' Party
(HSS)".
The Council assessed that it was utterly unacceptable that the HSS
President Zlatko Tomcic and prominent official Ivan Kolar - who are
MPs which means that they have taken oath to respect the
Constitution and laws - exploit illegal blockades of roads in their
pre-election activities.
The Council accentuated that "numerous positive steps have been
made in the Croatian agriculture," and the current problems, which
th HDZ does not underestimate, cannot be settled by the blockade of
roads and chaos, but they can be solved by persistent and concrete
attempts to find solutions which will improve the position of the
agricultural sector and farmers.
