ZAGREB, Sept 24 (Hina)- The Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ)
appointment of members to its Election camp is the final stage of
preparations for its pre-election campaign, said HDZ secretary
Drago Krpina at a news conference in Zagreb, Friday.
He emphasised that these decisions confirmed the stability and
harmony of the party and expressed his hope that the HDZ would once
again gain the confidence of its voters.
Commenting on possible election results, HDZ spokesman Ivica Ropus
said that the HDZ expected between 35 and 37 per cent of votes.
The head of the Committee for Relations with other Political
Parties, Unions and Associations, Nikica Valentic, stressed that
economic social stability was an important directive for HDZ's
election platform.
He added that relations with other parties during campaigning would
be raised to a higher level of political culture and maturity. "We
want to be competitors and not enemies and may the party with the
best programme win", Valentic said. He added that all the parties
were good but the HDZ was the best.
Asked about a possible coalition between the HDZ and other parties,
Valentic responded that the HDZ would face the elections on its own
however, it was prepared to post-electoral cooperation with
parties with similar programmes.
He noted that the HDZ is contacting the largest unions and was
prepared to cooperate with them and numerous other organisations.
There was mention of Thursday's meeting of the HDZ National Council
which elected the Main Election Camp and its committees. The
election camp will be headed by President Tudjman and when required
his deputy Ljerka Mintas Hodak who will also head the Committee for
Strategies and Coordination.
The Committee for Intra-party and Security Issues will be lead by
HDZ vice president Ivic Pasalic who will be responsible for
coordinating activities within the party and to propose electoral
listings.
The best possible solution would be to reach consensus over
electoral units, Pasalic said emphasising it was time for the HDZ to
expose new people and not only already established personalities.
In keeping with the current electoral system of election
campaigning, this will be at a local and state level, he said.
Election listings will be released as soon as possible offering a
multitude of new people.
Vice president Ljerka Mintas Hodak emphasised that HDZ's people in
the field should have a more decisive role in compiling the new
election listings. It is our intention that new personalities will
not only be formally placed on listings but will take an active part
in the Sabor and become Croatia's future politicians, she said.
