ZAGREB, Sep 17 (Hina)- The electoral law as proposed by the ruling
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is a guarantee for the upcoming
elections to be democratic and fair, HDZ's spokesman Ivica Ropus
said at a press conference held Friday.
Ropus said that the HDZ welcomed the Opposition Six's initiative on
the adoption of a Book of Rules for Croatian Television (HTV) during
hte election campaign expressing his hope that the Book of Rules
would remain in force even after the elections.
He expressed his disagreement with claims by the Opposition Six and
the Organisation for Cooperation and Security in Europe of the
unbalanced presentation of the HDZ on HTV. These claims aren't
realistic and are unfounded he said.
Ropus claimed that the pre-election campaign, accroding to
statements made by some party leaders, had already begun in a
climate of attempting to dramatise circumstances in Croatia.
According to Ropus, the economic situation in Croatia is
particularly being dramtised by the Social Democratic Party (SDP)
"whose politics in the former system left Croatia's economy in such
a difficult state".
He condemned attempts to influence the electoral body from outside
forces, stating that this could affect the fairness of the
elections.
Ropus believes that the oppositions pre-election campaing is
sharpening political circumstances in Croatia particularly
statements made by the Istrian Democratic Assembly's leadership on
the possibility of a state coup, claims which have been supported by
the Croatian Movement for Democratisation and Social Justice and
the Croatian Helsinki Committee as are the direct calls to ruin the
HDZ and demands that Croatia's president stand down.
The HDT however, Ropus said, is attempting to introduce correctness
into the pre-election battle and has shown a envious level of
poltiical tolerance.
Member of the HDZ' Main Committee, Djuro Njavro reported taht the
HDZ would forward a bill to the Sabor, as announced on amendments to
decrease the level of VAT on food products, some medicines and
books. It is proposed that the VAT level on these products be zero.
