Court suspends sale of seized ship of Serbian businessman Mitrovic

ZAGREB, Aug 12 (Hina) - The municipal court in Dubrovnik has adopted a temporary measure suspending the sale of Serbian businessman Zeljko Mitrovic's yacht which was previously impounded by the Croatian authorities for violation of customs regulations, Mitrovic's lawyer Neven Cirkveni said on Friday.

Mitrovic, the owner of the commercial broadcasting company "Pink Media Group", issued a statement saying that he was satisfied with the confirmation of his claims that the procedure was violated by "haughty and arrogant" Croatian customs authorities.

The lawyer said that under the Dubrovnik court's ruling, none of the parties could have free use of Mitrovic's impounded ship until the finalisation of the procedure.

The lawyer said that he had lodged a request for the temporary measure which prevented the auction of the impounded yacht in order to prevent its sale at a considerably lower price than the vessel's value which might have caused huge damage to his client.

Cirkveni expressed satisfaction with the court's ruling.

Mitrovic's yacht was seized in Croatia's territorial waters in September 2010 for violation of customs regulations and international conventions, and it was put up for sale at an auction after he refused to pay customs duties in the amount of two million euros.

After that Mitrovic launched a media war against Croatia, banning the promotion of Croatian tourist destinations in the programmes of his media company and threatening also to ban the airing of Croatian music and films in the five countries where Pink operates.

His conduct was condemned by the Serbian Independent Journalists' Association which said that it was contrary to the Act on Advertising which guarantees to foreign legal and natural persons the same rights as those enjoyed by domestic legal and natural persons, and that the owner of a private broadcaster using public frequences must not exploit the broadcaster to settle private disputes.

Last Monday, Croatian authorities invited a representative of the Serbian Embassy to talks at the Foreign Ministry, asking that measures be taken with regard to "negative and unfounded observations on Croatia, its institutions and companies in the broadcasts of the Serbian TV Pink broadcaster.
