During his stay in Pristina, the German minister called on all parties to implement an agreement which Serbia, Kosovo, and the NATO-led international Kosovo Force (KFOR) recently reached on the crisis in the northern area of Kosovo.
All parties should implement the provisional agreement reached by Serbia and Kosovo under the KFOR mediation. The ethnically-motivated conflicts are unacceptable and should not happen in Europe, Westerwelle told a news conference in Pristina after he met Kosovo top officials, including President Atifete Jahjaga and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.
Westerwelle called for the continuation of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia which was launched with the European Union's mediation.
It is important to solve all issues or misunderstandings through dialogue, he added.
Westerwelle reiterated that Germany's position was that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kosovo was the closed chapter and that the maps of the western Balkans were finalised.
Unilateral solutions are unacceptable, he said adding that his country supported Kosovo's European aspirations.
Kosovo PM Thaci told the news conference that the operations of the Kosovo government in the north of the country had been necessary in order to ensure the rule of law for some 40,000 inhabitants who he said were a hostage to criminals structures.
During his stay in Pristina, Westerwelle met European Union Special Representative in Kosovo, Fernando Gentilini, EULEX chief Xavier de Marnhac and other international officials.
He is also to meet with KFOR commander Erhard Buhler and is expected to tour the northern border crossing of Jarinje between Kosovo and Serbia, which was under the control of the US KFOR troops.
