NVS ADVOCATES FOR EXTENSION OF MORATORIUM ON MILITARY SERVICE FOR SERBS

VUKOVAR, Aug 26 (Hina) - The People's Council of Serbs (NVS) advocated for the extension of the moratorium on military service for the Serb minority in the Croatian Danube River region, NVS vice president Rade Leskovac told a press conference held in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on Thursday. Leskovac and NVS secretary general Veselin Pejnovic reported on NSV standpoints on military service and the political situation in Croatia, particularly in the Croatian Danube River region. Even though peaceful reintegration achieved positive results, there are still prejudice which are the result of events that took place not so long ago, Leskovac said. According to him, unless the moratorium on military service is extended "many Serb young men will flee the Croatian Danube River region which surely is not the goal of the Croatian state". Pejnovic said that dangerous politicisation of the Serb issue, headed by some Serb politicians who wish to close Serb population in a ghetto, is active in Croatia. Pejnovic also held talks with Vukovar-Srijem County prefect Rudolf Koening on political and economic situation in this part of Croatia. (hina) it
