U.N. MISSION IN KOSOVO INTENSIFIES WORK

PRISTINA, Aug 9 (Hina) - Members of the U.N. Mission in Kosovo on Monday told reporters the mission had started paying salaries to those employed in civilian services. Salaries have been paid to 25 judges and 14 customs officials, who were appointed by the U.N. Civil Mission in Kosovo. During the next week, workers in other civil sectors, such as health, fire brigades, and schools, will receive salaries as well. Forms in Serbian and Albanian for the registration of the newly born, deceased and the married will be distributed at the beginning of this week. The forms will be bearing UN insignia. According to the mission's officials, the verification of identity and residence of Kosovo citizens will begin in late September. The purpose of this is the establishment of a central register. The central register is the first step toward creating conditions for the registration of vehicles, issuance of travel documents and the making of a voters register, it was said at today's news conference in Pristina. The central post office in Pristina, which started operating on August 1, will be called the Kosovo Post and Telecommunications (PTK). U.N. officials said the laws which had been in effect until March 24 and are not in opposition to international standards and laws on human rights would remain in force. Council of Europe experts are investigating, at the initiative of the U.N. Civil Mission in Kosovo, four chapters of the existing laws.
