ZAGREB, Aug 5 (Hina) - Today we remember all those who gave their
lives for the defence of national and Christian sacred things, said
the military ordinary, Msgr. Juraj Jezerinac, during a Holy Mass he
said on Thursday to mark Homeland Gratitude Day.
Sacrifices made for the Homeland will be fruitful only if we abide
by the fundamental Christian principles, this Roman Catholic
dignitary said during the Mass held in the St Marc's Church in the
downtown Zagreb.
He recalled that the Croatian people had stuck to the basic
Christian principles in history and that it had never let anybody
conquer them.
He added that in the new atmosphere human freedom and hyped
democratic principles might transform into wild totalitarianism if
they are not imbued with God.
Croatia, a war-stricken country which has also suffered due to
abuses of unscrupulous individuals, should return to the Christian
roots in order that we can create a new land and new heaven, he
added.
At the end of his sermon, Msgr. Jezerinac called on the present
state and military officials to be unselfish in serving the
people.
"Your acts should be transparent so that the people can recognise in
you the guardians of peace and advocates of freedom," he said.
The basic task of a Christian politician, according to Jezerinac,
is to advocate values of life in the face of "civilisation of
unscrupulous economic dominance."
