workers.

This is the description of an average Croatian entrepreneur
according to information of the Croatian Payment Operations
Institute (ZAP) referring to results and activities of Croatian
businessmen in 1998.
The highest concentration of entrepreneurs is in commerce and then
in real estate industry and the manufacturing sector.
Out of 62,050 entrepreneurs covered by this poll, even 46 percent of
them is tradesmen, 15.6 percent is realtors, and just 14.5 percent
of privately-owned companies is in the manufacturing industry.
The structure of Croatian businesses since the Homeland War to date
has been changed considerably, the ZAP said adding that commerce
has tipped the scales against production which included even 36.3
percent of entrepreneurs in 1990.
Even 42 percent of registered entrepreneurs is in the city of Zagreb
and Zagreb County. Only 10.9 percent of them is in the area of Split,
or , for instance, 9.2 percent in Rijeka.
Most of entrepreneurs (96 percent) are small business owners.
For 1998, 130,534 entrepreneurs should have submitted statistical
data to the ZAP. Of them, 48,566 persons had the so-called dormant
accounts as not even a kuna had been settled or taken from such
accounts. This means that 48,566 entrepreneurs were inactive last
year.
