ZAGREB, July 12 (Hina) - Setting the election date is under direct
constitutional and legal jurisdiction of the President of the
Republic and he will determine it regardless of any other
circumstances, but in line with his assessments regarding the
adoption of the election law and the overall situation, the main
coordinator for the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party,
Vladimir Seks, told reporters on Monday.
Seks announced that he would met the coordinator for the
"Opposition Six", Drazen Budisa, on Wednesday afternoon. During
the meeting, Seks would present HDZ's stands regarding the election
law and the law on constituencies and the related suggestions made
by the Opposition Six.
Speaking about the election of MPs, Seks said that apart from
several details, the HDZ, the Opposition Six and other Opposition
parties had reached an agreement on that issue.
There are still several details which need to be clarified, he said,
adding the HDZ was even willing to accept a proposal by the
Opposition Six regarding the calculation of the so-called non-
fixed quota for the special electoral unit. The Opposition Six has
namely suggested that the calculation be based on the average of all
nine election units.
I believe it is a good solution to send every voter a notification
about the place of voting, but it costs, Seks said. If such a
solution is adopted, he continued, one should send about 3.5
million letters to citizens who can check voters' lists at polling
stations in their electoral units.
Asked about the possible deadline for the adoption of the new
election law, Seks said that considering the current situation and
the technical perfection of the bill, it would be realistic to
expect it in early September.
