ZAGREB, June 26 (Hina) - Police on Saturday searched the Zagreb flat
of "Nacional" weekly editor-in-chief Ivo Pukanic looking for
classified documents, in relation to articles on telephone tapping
published in the weekly's latest two issues.
The police found no documents classified top secret inside the
flat, Pukanic and his attorney Ivan Polan told reporters.
Prior to the search, Pukanic asked to see the search warrant, which
he then read to the press. The warrant says that Pukanic, as editor-
in-chief and author, published in articles documents on the alleged
tapping of the telephones of the President of the Republic and those
of his closest associates, and on the tapping of the telephone of
the selector of Croatia's soccer team Miroslav Blazevic.
The search warrant further says it is visible the published
documents are authentic and classified as "top secret". The search,
Pukanic read out, was ordered to find other safe-kept documents he
uses for his articles.
Pukanic said the warrant is "evidence given by the state that
everything 'Nacional' has published is true and authentic." He said
he did not know what they were looking for in his flat nor "why they
don't search the flats of (Interior Minister Ivan) Penic and
(official) Brzovic, and other politicians who ordered those
illegal actions."
After the search, Pukanic told reporters no classified documents
had been found. He showed the police the documents published in
"Nacional", which the police took away.
Pukanic's attorney Polan claims the search was illegal because
documents become public immediately upon publication, whereas the
object of the search were unfound classified documents.
The police later searched the house of Pukanic's parents in nearby
Velika Gorica. No documents were found there either, Pukanic told
reporters.
