So far final applications of 46 countries have been forwarded to the Games' organising committee. Of them, 30 have sent detailed lists of their athletes. According to Miljavac, participants from 79 countries are being expected at the Second World Military Games. Unfortunately, India has cancelled the arrival due to its conflict with Pakistan. Organisers believe that some 8,000 soldiers-sportsmen will take part in the Games. Safety of the participants will be guaranteed by 2,000 military policemen, 2,000 policemen, whereas additional 1,000 Croatian soldiers will be security guards. Miljavac told the session that 5.75 million dollars had been ensured from the military budget for the Games, and voiced hope that no more than some 4.5 million would be spent for this purpose. This does not cover means taken for the reconstruction and preparations of venues which local authorities have earmarked. Major Antun Mogus presented a programme of various cultural activities and events which will be held during the Games, adding that at the opening ceremony Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Juan Antonio Samaranch, will hold speeches. The chief-of staff of the Croatian Armed Forces' Headquarters, Vice-Admiral Davorin Domazet, said that in addition to the current staff in the organisation, over 3,200 people would help preparing the games as of today. Their headquarters will work around-the- clock as of July 12. "The Military Games are for the Croatian Army a test of doctrine in the function of peace and general stability," Domazet said. At the end of the session, CISM President Gianni Gola expressed gratitude for the excellent presentation and huge efforts invested into the preparation of the Games. I am sure that the Games will be successful thanks to your commitment, enthusiasm and support, he said. (hina) jn ms
