ZAGREB, May 20 (Hina) - Croatian police on Thursday prevented several hundred workers of the chain of department stores "Nama" to stage a protest in St Mark's Square, where the Government building is located. The workers are
protesting because the Government failed to provide assistance it had promised to the company. It was announced that Croatian Premier Zlatko Matesa would meet workers' representatives at 1.30 p.m. Around 9.30 a.m., the protesters, mostly women, managed to break through a police cordon for a moment but reinforcement was sent in and the workers' attempt to reach St Mark's Square was thwarted.Two protesters were lightly injured in the scuffle. Supporting his colleagues from "Nama", the president of the Association of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia, Davor Juric, said "nothing can be achieved with social dialogue any more, only with industrial actions". Workers of the footwear factory "Buducnost" from Ludbreg, near
Zagreb, should join "Nama" workers around the noon. "Buducnost"
workers are protesting because they have not received their
salaries since August 1998.
