ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - Members of the Croatian Radio television
(HRT) Council who opposed Obrad Kosovac's election as Croatian
Television's (HTV) editor-in-chief, on Monday mostly criticised
some aspects of his earlier work.
"If the political elite wishes to head the HTV on their own, let
them, and we are going home to sleep, Vlado Bogisic, a
representative of the Croatian Cultural society at the HRT Council,
said. He had voted against Kosovac.
Bogisic told reporters after a HRT Council session, after Kosovac's
election "there is no point in remaining a member of the Council,"
adding "his position is now equal to that of the president of the
Croatian Journalists' Society, Jagoda Vukusic".
She had stressed at the HRT Council's constitutive session she
would not participate in its work until "profession transcends
politics".
Among the arguments cited against the appointment of Obrad Kosovac,
the most frequent one was about his documentary (from the period of
the past regime) about cardinal Alojzije Stepinac.
Vladimir Paar of the Croatian Academy of Science and Art, who
supported Kosovac's election, said "this argument told him to vote
against Kosovac," but, he said, on the other hand, Kosovac was a
great professional. The HRT schedule which Kosovac submitted, also
looked professional.
Ante Djapic of the Croatian party of rights (HSP) stressed he could
not vote for Kosovac because "he deemed the information programme
and public television completely wrong".
The HTV is currently trying to be a public television by fulfilling
the demands of the left wing, Djapic said.
President of the association of electronic media "Forum 21", Damir
Matkovic, who was present at the HRT Council session although he is
not a member, said the election of Obrad Kosovac as HTV editor-in-
chief "demonstrated the depth of the lack of understanding of the
ruling party towards public television".
He said the HRT director and Council president Zlatko Canjuga, as
well as the new HTV editor-in-chief, were members of the ruling
party.
The HRT Council, which is to have 23 members, is still not working it
its full capacity as representatives of six opposition parties have
not appointed two members.
