ZAGREB, May 10 (Hina) - Three injured people and thirteen
apprehended were the results of a fight which broke out in Zagreb on
Sunday. The fight was initiated by members of a right-wing
organisation who disrupted a protest rally aimed at giving back a
Zagreb central square its former name of the "Square of Victims of
Fascism".
A Zagreb police representative said Monday police had not used
force to separate the conflicting sides nor during the arrests.
The police know who threw stones, and is close to apprehending a
person who threw tear-gas among the gathered people.
The rally held at Zagreb's Croatian Great Men was organised on
Sunday by a committee for giving back the square's former name. They
thus marked the day of victory over fascism for the tenth year in a
row.
However, the New Croatian Right Wing gathered protesters who oppose
the committee's request.
According to police estimates, there were 200 people on both
sides.
Committee president, Zoran Pusic, said the rally was a message
primarily for the youth who are being prevented from recognising
the fascist idea by making relative the notion of victims of
fascism.
The committee's request was supported by representatives of
several parties -- the Istrian Democratic Alliance, Croatian
People's Party, Social Democratic Party, Socialist Workers' Party
and the Action of Social Democrats.
Protesters who gathered on the side of the New Croatian Right Wing
bore numerous banners saying "We Demand the truth", "Red Bandits,
go to Belgrade", and others.
"Since the sixties I have only half a year of work life because of
your Tito," one of them shouted. He carried a banner which said
"Tito and the (Communist) Party are guilty of our persecution and
incarceration. We were incarcerated for 400,000 years".
The police issued a statement Monday a dozen "punks" had "extremely
radical conduct", one of whom was immediately taken away by
police.
