SARAJEVO, May 7 (Hina) - The Interior Ministry of the Federation of
Bosnia-Herzegovina is not capable of an effective fight against
terrorism and does not have sufficiently expressed political
readiness to do so Interior Minister Mehmed Zilic and his deputy
Tomislav Mihalj said before the Bosnian Federation Parliament
House of Peoples on Friday.
Citing two separate and unharmonised reports on the current
situation in the Federation and measures to be undertaken to
prevent terrorism, Zilic and Mihalj presented two different
suggestions for measures to be undertaken.
Zilic advocated the strengthening of the federal Interior
Ministry, the urgent adoption of a law against terrorism, the
establishment of special departments of the federal police in
canton centres, the establishment of anti-terrorist units, control
over the movement of foreigners and persons with dual citizenship,
and entwining police structures into a unified communication and
information system.
Mihalj suggested the establishment of a special coordination body
for the fight against terrorism in which the most prominent Bosnian
Federation officials would be included.
"Bad assessments led us to this occurrence of terrorism," Mihalj
said. He added the federal police had prepared to fight against mass
unrest caused by citizens dissatisfied with their living
conditions, and thus was unprepared for terrorist attacks.
