ZAGREB, Apr 1 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday adopted a report on the position of Croats as a minority in European countries. Deputy Premier Jure Radic said special attention must be directed at the Croat minority in the
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He stressed the government was doing everything to protect and aid the very small number of Croats in the south Yugoslav province of Kosovo. Pointing out that Croatia was often criticised for the respect of human rights and minorities, Radic said Croatia earmarks ten times more funds for minorities than all European countries in which a Croat minority lives put together. Today the government also passed a decree on the establishment of an educational cultural centre of Hungarians in Croatia with a seat in the eastern Croatian town of Osijek. At the closed part of the session, the government discussed an
International Committee of the Red Cross 1998 report on the
humanitarian and security situation of endangered population on
former conflict territories in Croatia.
The government adopted a model for the exercising of national
minorities' members' ethnic rights, and distributed means from the
1999 state budget for the financing of a national minorities
programme.
Also adopted was a proposal by the Office for Organisations on non-
government organisations' programmes and sums for financial
support in the course of this year.
The government passed decisions on a programme for the
restructuring of Croatia's largest press distributor "Tisak",
which recently led Croatian press publishers into financial
difficulties via irregular payment for sold press.
Mirko Kovacev has been relieved as assistant agriculture and
forestry minister on account of stepping into a new office. Dalibor
Brozovic has been appointed chief manager of the "Miroslav Krleza"
Lexicography Institute. Nikica Valentic has been appointed
chairman of the "Plitvice Lakes National Park" public
institution's administrative council.
