ZAGREB, 25 March (Hina) - Marija Peakic-Mikuljan on Thursday resigned from her post as Croatian Television editor-in-chief, a mere ten days after her nomination, claiming that she had "been duped in the most harshest manner".
Peakic-Mikuljan told the public that she was giving her irrevocable resignation because she did not agree that the recent problems which had arisen regarding the nomination of the Television's editor-in-chief needed to be resolved by the Parliament with amendments to the Law on Croatian Television. This option resulted yesterday after a proposal by the Television Council's president Zlatko Canjuga and HRT director Ivica Vrkic, said Peakic-Mikuljan. ZAGREB, 25 March (Hina) - Marija Peakic-Mikuljan on Thursday
resigned from her post as Croatian Television editor-in-chief, a
mere ten days after her nomination, claiming that she had "been
duped in the most harshest manner".
Peakic-Mikuljan told the public that she was giving her irrevocable
resignation because she did not agree that the recent problems
which had arisen regarding the nomination of the Television's
editor-in-chief needed to be resolved by the Parliament with
amendments to the Law on Croatian Television. This option resulted
yesterday after a proposal by the Television Council's president
Zlatko Canjuga and HRT director Ivica Vrkic, said Peakic-
Mikuljan.
"As of this day, I offer my irrevocable resignation to a position I
competed for fairly and was then duped in the most harshest manner,
event to the point of violation to valid Croatian laws", claimed
Peakic-Mikuljan noting that this resulted in damages to herself
personally.
At the proposal of HRT's director on March 15 the Council by
majority nominated Peakic-Mikuljan as the HRT's editor-in-chief
however, the Council was not presented with a program nor its
contents. It was decided at the time, that the programme would be
discussed in two weeks however, the Council's president has still
not convened a new meeting.
Peakic-Mikuljan considers that the HRT administration is obliged
to explain to the public what is "hidden" behind its programme and
why the programme was to the HRT's Council in an abridged version.
Peakic-Mikuljan submitted her resignation, two days after she was
nominated to the position however, she postponed her decision after
being convinced of this by HRT Council president Zlatko Canjuga.
Mikuljan had set a condition to be accepted to the Television's
administration upon accepting the new position. However, in the
meantime, the Supervisory Board had already found a replacement for
Mirko Galic who had resigned from the five-man HRT administration.
Speaking at a press conference recently, Galic stated that the
nomination of the new editor-in-chief was influenced by the
government and it was known ahead of time that the position would be
given to Mikuljan.
The unions and Branch of HRT Journalists recently demanded the re-
advertisement of the position of the editor-in-chief.
