ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - The trial against Dinko Sakic, indicted
for war crimes against civilians as a former commander of the
Jasenovac concentration camp during WWII, will continue on
Wednesday, March 17, president of the Zagreb County Court panel of
judges, Drazen Tripalo, said on Monday.
The schedule of calling witnesses to the stand will be set by judge
Tripalo. He added the presenting of evidence would end by May 30.
The County State Attorney Radovan Santek proposed an addendum to
the indictment. He also suggested two witnesses from Israel and
five from Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Herzegovina be brought to the
trial. They were summonsed by the investigative judge during pre-
trial proceedings, but they did not appear.
Sakic's defence attorney Ivan Kern requested that the statements by
two Israeli witnesses, witness testimonies given to Yugoslav and
Republika Srpska courts, Dinko Sakic's interview, his letter to
Ekrem Spahic, all decisions by the Land and State Commission for the
Determination of Crimes Committed by the Occupying Forces and their
Collaborators, as well as copies of documents, be erased from the
court transcripts, as, he said, they do not present valid
evidence.
"The defence counsel will insist on the validity of every presented
document," Kern said.
Following a deliberation, the Zagreb County Court panel of judges
decided that affidavits by three witnesses given to police be taken
out from the transcript, but dismissed the request for the removal
of Yugoslav and Republika Srpska court transcripts containing the
questioning of witnesses, the affidavits of two Israeli citizens,
the newspaper interview, the letter and the decisions of the Land
and State Commission for the Determination of Crimes Committed by
the Occupying Forces and their Collaborators, as well as copies of
documents.
Attending the start of the trial on Monday were representatives of
the Croatian Legal Centre, the Croatian Helsinki Committee,
Aba/Ceele association, Croatian-Israeli Society, Zagreb Jewish
Community, Jerusalem's Simon Wiesenthal Centre, Belgrade's Museum
of Genocide, the Yugoslav Federal Justice Ministry, the America,
French and Yugoslav embassies, and the president of the Croatian
Party of rights, Anto Djapic.
