WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Hina) - A three-day ceremony to be organised on
occasion of the opening OF Croatia's consulate general in Chicago
this April is envisaged to be a great and multifarious promotion of
Croatia, said Croatian Ambassador to the United States, Miomir
Zuzul, on Friday.
The ceremony called "Croatia in Chicago" is scheduled from 6 to 8
April.
In Washington, Ambassador Zuzul held a working meeting with
representatives of several biggest associations of American Croats
and consul-generals from New York, Los Angeles and Cleveland to
discuss plans for the event.
After the meeting he voiced satisfaction with the overall support
which American Croats have given to the Chicago ceremony.
The Croatian Fraternal Association (HBZ) President, Bernard
Luketic, pledged to include not only 15 HBZ branches from the
Chicago area but also the entire association in preparations for
the opening of the consulate general in Chicago.
The Croatian days in Chicago will also mark the seventh anniversary
after the United States recognised Croatia on April 7, 1992.
On this occasion, a delegation of Croatian high-ranking officials
is likely to arrive in the United States. Croatian businessmen will
also come to present opportunities of investment into Croatia.
We all wish to promote the cooperation and strengthen ties
between Croatia and the United States, Ambassador Zuzul said.
The ceremony will consist of political and economic programmes as
well as cultural and sports events.
About 200,000 citizens of the Croatian descent live in Chicago, and
more than 800,000 are in nine federal states which will be covered
with the Chicago-based Croatian consulate-general.
We are delighted that the consulate will open, said Nevenka
Jurkovic, the head of the first branch "Croatian Woman" in
Chicago.
About our 200 members with their families will help prepare a
ceremonial dinner for some 3,000 guests, Jurkovic added.
American Croats will use their influence and respectability to
attract the attention of the U.S. public, politicians, businessmen
and other famous figures to the "Croatia in Chicago" event.
