VUKOVAR/VINKOVCI, Jan 12 (Hina) - Chairwoman of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly, Helle Degn, on Tuesday visited the Croatian Danubian region (eastern Croatia) where she held talks with local officials. She met behind closed doors with a returnee family and a displaced family, followed by a meeting with the president of the Joint Council of Municipalities, Milos Vojnovic. From the talks with the two families, I realised that there were multiple problems both in property relations and human contacts, which were not satisfactory, Degn said. She added that five families were moving out the Danubian area on a daily basis, which was a signal that the reconciliation process was not functioning. The return process is complicated. We are aware of the difficulty of the problem and we do not expect it to be solved over night, she said before leaving for Vinkovci (also eastern Croatia). Vojnovic said he had spoken with the OSCE delegation about some concrete property issues and the situation in the justice system, adding that the reasons for the Serbs leaving the area were political, security and social situation. In Vinkovci, Degn met the prefect of the Vukovar-Srijem County, Rudolf Koenig, and heads of regional offices for refugees and displaced persons from Vinkovci and Osijek. Degn said after the meeting that the international community was prepared to cooperate with the Croatian Government, with the aim of resolving problems burdening the process of peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danubian area. "We acquainted the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly chairwoman with the reconciliation process and the return programme, and especially with the security situation in the region which is more than good. We also pointed out the problems in economy in the Danubian region," Koenig said after the meeting. (hina) lml mm
