SARAJEVO, Jan 10 (Hina) - By Sunday morning the Sarajevo-based
command of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force (SFOR) did not receive
any response from Ante Jelavic, the Croat member of Bosnia-
Herzegovina's collective presidency, to suspend appointments of
high-ranking officers.
On Saturday, SFOR asked Jelavic to revoke his decision on
appointments, conducted without consent of SFOR commanders.
We have not yet received answer, but we have been permanently in
touch with Jelavic and his office, SFOR spokeswoman Sheena Thomson
told Hina just before the Sunday noon.
She said destruction of the arms seized from the Croat Defence
Council (HVO) barracks the day before had not started so far, as
efforts were being taken to solve the current problems.
On Saturday, SFOR Chief Commander General Montgomery Meigs ordered
his soldiers to carry out a raid into HVO barracks. During the raid a
considerable amount of arms and communications equipment was
seized from the HVO bases in Livno and Cubren near Kiseljak.
That action was taken after Jelavic had appointed Generals Zeljko
Siljeg and Zlatan Mijo Jelic to commanding posts of the Bosnian
Croat-Moslem Federal Army three days ago although he had not asked
SFOR's consent for such a move.
SFOR has threatened to destroy the confiscated weaponry if the
decision has not been suspended, The deadline for the decision's
revocation expired on Sunday morning.
