ZAGREB, Jan 6 (Hina) - The Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on
Wednesday released a statement responding to a letter which Mayor
of Hrvatska Kostajnica (a town 100 kms south-east of Zagreb sent to
Foreign Minister Mato Granic.
Considering the letter which the Mayor of Hrvatska Kostajnica,
Davor Govorcinovic, sent to Foreign Minister Mate Granic, we would
like to stress that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Mate
Granic personally share completely discontent of Hrvatska
Kostajnica citizens with being unable to approach Stari Grad (the
Old Town on the right bank of the Una River), which is currently
being under the control of authorities of the Republic of Srpska,
read the Ministry's statement.
According to the statement, a solution to the Kostajnica Stari Grad
issue was and is on the agenda of all talks with the Bosnian Serb
representatives, and this issue was given top priority by the
Croatian side at the first meeting of the mixed Croatian-Bosnian
commission for border issues on December 7, 1998.
The Republic of Croatia has a firm stand that all open border
questions, raised by the collapse of the former Yugoslavia or the
aggression against Croatia, must be solved by peaceful means,
following the Washington and Dayton agreements, and they should be
resolved by the work of diplomatic border commissions typical of
international relations.
Croatia believes that it will find the full understanding and
assistance of the international community for the resolution of
this border issue, the statement read.
The Ministry would like to emphasise that, according to information
of competent state bodies, the unacceptable situation in the area
has not been substantially changed in any way recently, concluded
the statement signed by the Ministry's spokesman, Zeljko
Trkanjec.
