SARAJEVO, Jan 5 (Hina) - The international community and the Office
of the High Representative in Bosnia (OHR) are taking great efforts
to ensure for Bosnian Croats access to the media, but, at the same
time, they are demanding the introduction of the rule of law and the
cessation of the illegal re-broadcasting of Croatian radio and
television programme in Bosnia, said Simon Haselock, Carlos
Westendorp's deputy, in charge of the media,.
Haselock told Tuesday's news conference in Sarajevo that reports by
the Croatian press about problems in the establishment of Bosnian
(Moslem-Croat) Federal Radio and Television did not correctly
present the real state of affairs.
"The international community spares no effort to ensure for the
Croatian community in Bosnia the right to access to the media. This
also means that illegal activities will be tolerated no longer,
Haselock said in Sarajevo.
The Deputy High Representative explained that it referred to the
fact that the Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) broadcast some
programmes illegally in the territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
He added that the activities of the HRT must be brought in
accordance with the law.
Commenting on current discussions whether the Bosnian Federation
needs national TV channels, Haselock said it was an "anachronism"
now when the digital television was being expected to replace the
present technology in the whole of Europe, making possible the
introduction of dozens of new channels.
"Any kind of the federal TV must guarantee the respect for the
rights of the constituent peoples and have a joint management,"
Haselock told the news conference.
"The public deserves the legally arranged television which will
serve all ethnic communities. We are looking forward to
constructive proposals by political leaders rather than attacks
against us in the press, since it is counterproductive," he said.
