LJUBLJANA, Dec 23 (Hina) - Croatia and Slovenia have agreed that the
principle of the 'historical cadaster' should be taken into account
while defining the land border and that the same principle should
apply to the Dragonja River area and Sveta Gera, Slovene President
Milan Kucan told Slovene radio last Thursday.
Commenting on relations between the two countries, Kucan said the
two governments, which he said now enjoyed great support from their
parliaments, could no longer postpone the solution of border issues
as well as that they had to convince domestic and international
public that a solution is possible, instead of fostering a
xenophobic atmosphere.
Asked to comment on claims that the previous government led by
Andrej Bajuk had adopted a conclusion under which Slovene organs
should forcibly take over control of three villages on the left side
of the River Dragonja, Kucan said he had not been informed about it
or the new Slovene government's decision to revoke the conclusion.
"I would not comment on the decision that was adopted then but I
would like to quote a well known saying - it is much easier to start a
war than to end it. Violence and thoughtless acts cannot solve such
sensitive issues," he said.
"The border on that unfortunate spot has not been finally defined
but both states have agreed to abide by the so-called cadastral
principle... when marking the border," Kucan said.
Speaking about the media coverage of border issues in both
countries, Kucan said fostering an atmosphere of xenophobia on both
sides was not a good thing. It flares up quickly and is very
difficult to put out and its consequence is lack of trust, he said.
He added both governments had sufficient support to reach an
agreement on border issues.
