ZAGREB, Dec 15 (Hina) - Parliament's House of Representatives on
Friday wrapped up a debate on amendments to the Health Care Law,
which should separate the public from the private health sector.
The amendments represent an important step forward in the health
reform because of the division between the public and the private
sector, said Health Minister Ana Stavljenic-Rukavina.
To date, only some physicians were able to work in both. This made
other health workers very unhappy, as well as patients who pointed
to abuse, she reminded. Private physicians complained too, for
disloyal competition.
According to the amendments, physicians may continue working out of
their regular hours but only in the health institutions which
employ them. Those with private offices have one year to decide if
they want to work in a public or private institution.
Many MPs objected, saying that many physicians had invested
considerable funds to purchase medical equipment and were now
prohibited from practising. Some MPs suggested forwarding the
amendments into second reading.
