SERB NATIONAL COUNCIL ACCUSES MEDIA OF SLAMMING SERB RETURNEES

ZAGREB, Dec 13 (Hina) - President of the Serb National Council (SNV) Milorad Pupovac on Wednesday denounced media attempts to show recent incidents in areas of return (Banovina, Siveric) as Serb returnees trying to destabilise the state. The incidents to which Pupovac referred at a news conference, were the recent killings of four Croats in Banovina committed, according to current official information, by a member of former Serb paramilitary troops, and the setting up of barricades on a railway near Siveric several days ago, causing a passenger and a freight train to jump from the rails. The incidents, Pupovac said, show there is no readiness to approach the issues of living and position of the Serb community in an objective way in the interest of return. Instead, he asserted, the media are trying to create an image of Serbs again wanting a rebellion and destabilisation. He dismissed such ideas and stressed Serb returnees wished to live in peace. The Serb community in Croatia will do everything to not connect such incidents with it, and is dismissing any connection with individuals who may be involved in them. "If somebody did this, let the police establish it. We have had enough of Serbs being mentioned in the media only in connection to crime ... and being still stigmatised by some political circles," Pupovac said. Asked what circles he was talking about, he said they were those who wish to stop the stabilisation of Croatia in democratic values and deter attention from true problems, including those in areas of return.
