'GLOBUS' EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: IF DOCUMENT IS IMPORTANT FOR PUBLIC, GLOBUS WILL PUBLISH IT

ZAGREB, Dec 3 (Hina) - Croatia's weekly 'Globus' will not respect the "Order for the Immediate Cessation of Violations of Protective Measures for Witnesses" of December 1, because if it assesses that a document is important for the public, it will be published, 'Globus' editor-in-chief Davor Butkovic told Hina Sunday. Butkovic stressed that without a final verdict, neither the Hague tribunal nor any other institution could order what could and what could not be published, because it violated the principles of the freedom of media. The ICTY Trial Chamber on December 1 sent Croatia's papers 'Slobodna Dalmacija' and 'Globus' the "Order for the Immediate Cessation of Violations of Protective Measures for Witnesses". A November issue of the 'Globus' weekly and the November 28, 29 and 30 issues of 'Slobodna Dalmacija' daily brought statements from or transcripts of the testimony given by a protected witness before the Tribunal. The ICTY requested Croatian authorities to take all necessary measures to prevent the publication of the testimony and provide it with any information on the identity of persons potentially responsible for the disclosure of the documents and violation of ICTY orders and decisions on the protection of witnesses.
